During my posting as deputy defense attaché in Paris, I became fascinated by the way France protects its strategic interests. One of these is the strategic autonomy of the country, for which an autonomous defense industry is one of the pre-requisites. In order for the French defense industry to be and continue to be self-supporting, the export of French armament becomes more and more important, in particular for the more sophisticated systems. This is why the French government makes big efforts to support and promote the French defense industry and its products. It uses a number of mechanisms, amongst which the diplomacy, the defense budget, direct support in various ways by the French MoD, political interventions, export insurances and important or preferential state shareholding in defense industry enterprises.
